Circuit Training

I didn't actually participate in the circuit class today but I thought I would make a note of it, as it was Running Group's first ever circuit class. After dinner, my left leg was hurting from yesterday's run, so it's probably a good thing I didn't work my legs out more today.

After the class Dan spotted me for one set of bench presses at 40kg. I struggled to complete 6 reps and Dan says she wasn't helping that much but it certainly felt like she was to me.

Kels and Dan benched a set each with much more ease than I. More reps too. I'll get there... eventually.

Speed Work

Everyone at Running Group must have been having one of those days. We all just seemed a little tired and not feeling like giving it our all. The session was still good though - every time we have one of these speed work sessions I feel it pretty quickly, and yet at the same time I can tell I've improved.

I think it's these sessions that have improved my running stamina dramatically in the recent months. Thanks, Brett, for setting us up with this form of training. It is certainly a valuable tool for the training kit.

Thousand Stair Challenge

It's never as bad the second time around. We all went up the stairs twice again, and had a great time. Nyasha did an excellent job, barely stopped on the way up, which is a massive step forward from last time! Taf proved herself a toughie, pushing herself hard all the way up. And this was only her first time! Tendai was a great encouragement to everyone.

We almost didn't go up the second time but on the way down the stairs, met Rehana on her way up the second time and knew we couldn't not do it again and leave her to go by herself!

As for Brett and Dan, well they were playing a whole different ball game. I could tell Dan was about to die physically and yet her mental strength kept pushing her upward and faster. You two are nuts! An inspiration, but nuts all the same.

Time Trial

The last time I did a time trial at The Tan (distance 3.87km) about 2 months ago, my time was between 24-25 minutes.

I broke that time today! 21mins, 41 seconds. That means my pace was 5:36 (mins per km). I am so rapt!

I definitely pushed myself today - had a stitch on the right side of my rib cage for most of the run, but kept going. All I kept thinking during the run was, "This hurts so much, my time had better be faster than my previous time or else I'll be really annoyed!"

I did not expect to shave 3 minutes off my previous time, so I am most definitely very pleased with myself.

Running Group

Running Group met at Freeway Reserve in Mulgrave today for speed work. After yesterday's long run with Katie, today's training session was set to be a killer.

However perhaps I have improved my strength... it actually wasn't too bad. The hammies were already sore after the warm up, but my cardiovascular fitness is definitely improving with each speed work session.

Running Group is going so well, we had 12 people come today, and of those twelve it appears that about 10 are committed to regular attendance, which is fantastic! Of the other two, one is definitely committed to every speed work session, also wonderful.

The warm up exercise is becoming a favourite of mine - we job around the oval in single file, 5m between each person. The person at the back of the line sprints to the front of the line, and every person does that when they are at the back of the line. A great exercise which goes quickly because you're so focussed on staying the right distance behind the person in front of you, and yet it builds a bit of teamwork, being a group exercise.

Interval sprints could have been a killer but Brett only made us do 3 sets.

Hill sprints are probably my least favourite, but again I think I am getting better at these. They are hard work but the results are starting to show already. We did 15 of these (sprint to top, walk down, sprint to top, etc).

We ended with a bit of strength work - push ups, sit ups, squats, calf raises, back extensions, lunging jumps. Each exercise was at a station, jogs between each station, last station was a sprint. We did three sets with a partner. That was fun.

Definitely gonna pay for this one tomorrow, I am sore tonight already!
